Work Less, Play More!

Many people work forty hours a week. The eight-hour workday has been common since the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. But nowadays, many countries are looking into shorter workweeks.

많은 사람들이 일주일에 40시간 일한다. 8시간 근무는 19세기 산업혁명 이후 일반적이었다. 하지만 요즘 많은 나라들이 주당 근로시간 단축을 검토하고 있다.

 

Supporters say that working fewer hours would leave people more time for friends and family. They say that most people have no time to take care of things in their personal lives. This is why they eat fast food, drive when they could walk, and are disconnected from nature.

지지자들은 더 적은 시간 동안 일하는 것이 사람들에게 친구들과 가족을 위한 더 많은 시간을 남겨줄 것이라고 말한다. 그들은 대부분의 사람들이 개인적인 삶에서 일을 돌볼 시간이 없다고 말한다. 이것은 그들이 패스트푸드를 먹고, 그들이 걸을 수 있을 때 운전하며, 자연으로부터 단절된 이유이다.

They are not very productive. They get stress-related illnesses, so they have to take sick leave. A shorter workweek would give people time to do things they enjoy. They would be happier at work, too. 그들은 그다지 생산적이지 않다. 그들은 스트레스와 관련된 질병에 걸리기 때문에 병가를 내야 한다. 주당 근무시간이 짧으면 사람들이 즐기는 일을 할 수 있는 시간을 갖게 될 것이다. 그들은 또한 직장에서 더 행복할 것이다.

 

However, there are possible disadvantages to a shorter workweek. One is that less work could mean less pay. Supporters of shorter workweeks argue that workers should be paid the same despite working less.

하지만, 주당 근무 시간 단축에는 불이익이 있을 수 있다. 하나는 일을 적게 하면 보수를 덜 받을 수 있다는 것이다. 근로시간 단축을 지지하는 사람들은 근로자는 적게 일해도 똑같이 임금을 받아야 한다고 주장한다.

 

They point to Germany and the Netherlands, where employees work less than before for the same pay. They contrast this with the United Kingdom and the United States. Employees there work longer hours but are paid the same as workers in similar jobs in the Netherlands or Germany.

그들은 독일과 네덜란드를 가리키는데, 독일과 네덜란드는 직원들이 이전보다 같은 임금을 받고 일을 덜 한다고 한다. 그들은 이것을 영국 그리고 미국과 대조한다. 그곳의 직원들은 더 오래 일하지만 네덜란드나 독일의 비슷한 직업에 종사하는 근로자들과 같은 임금을 받는다.

 

Some countries will experiment before deciding to change working times. The Swedish government, for example, has a theory that workers grow tired after six hours, becoming less productive and creative. They will choose one city and allow some employees to work six hours a day while others work the standard eight. After one year, they will compare the performance of each group and decide whether to shorten work hours.

어떤 나라들은 근무 시간을 바꾸기로 결정하기 전에 실험을 할 것이다. 예를 들어 스웨덴 정부는 노동자들이 6시간 후에 피곤해 지면서 생산성과 창의성이 떨어진다는 이론을 가지고 있다. 그들은(Some countries) 한 도시를 선택해서 일부 직원들을 하루에 6시간 일하게 하고 반면 다른 직원들은 표준 8시간을 일할 수 있게 할 것이다. 1년 뒤에 그들은 각 그룹의 실적을 비교한 뒤 근무시간 단축 여부를 결정할 예정이다.

Shorter workweeks seem suitable in the modern world. If companies shorten the workweek, they might see an increase in hourly productivity. Employees might be happier and more loyal. It will be interesting to see how this policy develops in countries over the coming years.

단축된 노동시간은 현대 사회에서 적합해 보인다. 만약 기업들이 근로시간을 단축하면 시간당 생산성의 증가를 볼 지도 모른다. 직원들은 더 행복하고 충성스러울 것이다. 향후 몇 년 동안 이 정책이 어떻게 전개되는지 보는 것은 흥미로울 것이다.
